St George's Church, in conjunction with Leeds Churches Together in Mission, organised an act of witness in Leeds city centre on 10th April 2005 to protest about asylum injustices.

It was led by the Right Reverend John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, who was joined by Anglican, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal and other church leaders, united in stating their objections to injustices towards asylum seekers.

In the run-up to the general election, Bishop John called on political leaders to refrain from exploiting the asylum issue for political ends. The event was attended by 350-400 Leeds Christians who were all determined to register their own protests as well.
