In addition to being good for your health and well being, we believe sports and exercise are great ways of sharing life and building community here at St George’s. They also provide great platforms to share the Good News of Jesus to a large group of people.
StG’s has three sports teams - Men’s Football, Cricket and Netball - which all meet to train, play and socialise regularly. These teams provide a great way for anyone new to St George’s who loves to play sport to quickly become involved and feel like part of the family. Check out the sections below to find out more about these teams and how to get involved.
StG’s FC were formed in 2011 and are now entering our ninth season in the Yorkshire Christian Football League. Our eight year history has seen us victorious in the YCFL Trophy and beaten finalists a year later, accompanied by promotion to the Premier Division, where we now play.
Games are played on Saturday mornings - 10:30am kick-off - from September to May; home games in North Leeds and away games across Yorkshire (lifts can be provided by the club where needed). No experience of playing 11-a-side is needed, but we ask that players are at least 16 years old at the start of the season and able to compete at a reasonable amateur football standard.
The league exists to use football as a platform for mission, and as such there is an expectation within the club that players hold to the highest standard of fair play at all times and, for those who are Christians, represent the church and their faith in a way that honours and celebrates God to those around them.
If you’re interested in getting involved, or finding out more, email Matt Malone at email@example.com.
St George’s Cricket Club formed in 1977 after a Single vs Married game and we have been playing at the beautiful grounds of Harewood House since 1979. Our 40+ year history has seen many members of St Gs, as well as friends, play and socialise together.
We play mid-week (mainly Wednesday evening) T20 matches and 40-over games on weekends throughout the summer, as well as pre-season indoor nets at the Headingley Cricket Centre. See here for the upcoming 2019 season fixtures.
We welcome all players who want to play friendly, non-league cricket. If that’s you, get in touch with Tony Sheppard at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are about to launch a brand new St G’s Netball Team, and we’d love you to be a part of it!
Our vision is to make community across St George’s through Netball, bringing together people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, with a goal of being witnesses of Christ through the sport. So whilst we want to start out with training and community within St G’s, we would ultimately love to expand and play in a league, where we would be able to show the love of Jesus to those we play against.
We expect to hire a court every two weeks initially, but first we would love to get a better idea of interest so we can decide on what works for everyone. If you want to get involved, speak to Abby Brown at email@example.com.
Evangelism & Events
In addition to helping build community, sport and exercise are great platforms to enable Christians to live out and share their faith in Jesus Christ. In partnership with Christians in Sport, we’ll put on bible studies, training events and more, aimed at equipping Christians involved in regular sport and exercise to play in a way that honours God, pray for the people they train and play with, and say something to them about Jesus.
Additionally, sporting events are huge in Leeds, and all across the UK. There is an exciting opportunity for our Church to run events alongside big events like the World Triathlon Series or various World Cups, where we can invite friends to enjoy sport in a different environment and see something of the Christian faith in action.
We are having a launch evening on Monday 20th May at 7pm, at St. George’s Church, where we’ll share more about this exciting opportunity to preach Jesus through sport and exercise.
